How to Shop Online Safely

Online shopping can be a convenient way to get the products you need at a price you can afford. However, it also has its risks. For example, digital thieves can steal your personal information when you shop on unsecure websites. This can lead to identity theft or phishing scams.

There are some simple steps you can take to help make online shopping safer. These include ensuring that the website you use is secure, using strong passwords and making sure your mobile device is updated regularly.

Never give your credit card or other sensitive personal information to anyone via email or text message. These emails may be fake or contain viruses and other malware. If you receive a suspicious email or text, delete it and don’t open attachments or click links in it.

Keep your personal details safe at all times while you’re online by using a virtual private network (VPN) to connect to the Internet. This will protect your information from being intercepted by hackers, so it’s a good idea to invest in a VPN as soon as you can.

Make sure to check that the site you’re using is secure by looking for the “s” at the beginning of the website address and a padlock icon on your browser window. If the site is not secure, it’s best to leave it and try a different site.

If you’re buying from a large retailer like Amazon or Walmart, consider downloading their mobile apps to make your purchases more convenient. But be aware that hackers can break into these apps to steal your information, so it’s important to regularly update them and turn on auto-updates.

Avoid using public computers and WiFi networks when shopping online, as these are vulnerable to digital snoopers who can record your activity and steal your passwords. Instead, shop from your home computer or on a virtual private network, which is more secure.

Shop with retailers you know and trust. This will mean that you’ll be more likely to find good deals and avoid being ripped off by shady companies.

Always read the retailer’s return policy before you make a purchase. Some retailers charge restocking fees and other penalties for returns. These charges are often taken from the amount you paid for the item.

It’s also a good idea to save receipts or other proof of your purchase for reference when you have to return an item. This will allow you to compare it with your credit card billing statement and ensure that your purchase was in fact made.

You can also sign up for newsletters from certain retailers to receive coupons and discounts on future purchases. But make sure that you only sign up for these emails if they’re legitimate and you’ve already registered your details on the retailer’s website.

Don’t forget to check your bank or credit card statements after you make an online purchase for any unusual charges. If the transaction is suspicious or there’s a discrepancy between your credit card and your bank or credit card statements, contact your financial institution right away to report it.
